Gulab Jamun - Indian dish
Recipe for Gulab Jamun:
Gulab Jamun is a delectable Indian sweet that is enjoyed on various occasions and festivals. These soft, syrup-soaked dumplings are a true delight for anyone with a sweet tooth. Here's a traditional recipe for preparing homemade Gulab Jamun:
Ingredients:
For Gulab Jamun:
- 1 cup milk powder
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
- 3-4 tablespoons milk (approximately)
- A pinch of cardamom powder
- Chopped nuts (such as almonds or pistachios) for garnishing (optional)
For Sugar Syrup (Gulab):
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 cups water
- A few saffron strands (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon rose water
Instructions:
1. Making the Sugar Syrup:
- In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Place it over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
- Add saffron strands (if desired) and let the syrup simmer for about 5-6 minutes until it slightly thickens.
- Remove from heat and add rose water. Mix well and set the syrup aside.
2. Preparing the Gulab Jamun Dough:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the milk powder, all-purpose flour, and baking powder.
- Add ghee (clarified butter) to the dry mixture and mix it well with your fingers until it resembles breadcrumbs.
- Gradually add milk, a tablespoon at a time, and knead gently to form a smooth and soft dough. Be careful not to over-knead the dough.
3. Shaping the Gulab Jamun:
- Divide the dough into small portions and roll them into smooth, crack-free balls. Ensure that the balls are compact and without any cracks, as they may break while frying.
- Keep the shaped Gulab Jamun balls covered with a damp cloth to prevent them from drying out.
4. Frying the Gulab Jamun:
- Heat oil or ghee in a deep pan or kadai over medium heat. The oil should be moderately hot, not too hot, as it will brown the Gulab Jamuns quickly without cooking them inside.
- Gently slide the Gulab Jamun balls into the hot oil using a slotted spoon or tongs, taking care not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them in batches.
- Stir the Gulab Jamuns occasionally for even browning and fry until they turn golden brown. It may take around 5-6 minutes.
- Once fried, remove the Gulab Jamuns from the oil and drain excess oil by placing them on a kitchen paper towel.
5. Soaking the Gulab Jamun:
- While the fried Gulab Jamuns are still warm, drop them into the prepared warm sugar syrup. Ensure that the syrup is warm, but not boiling hot.
- Let the Gulab Jamuns soak in the syrup for at least 30 minutes to an hour, allowing them to absorb the sweetness and become soft and syrupy.
6. Serving Gulab Jamun:
- Garnish Gulab Jamun with chopped nuts (if desired) and serve them warm or at room temperature.
- Gulab Jamuns taste best when served fresh, but they can also be refrigerated and enjoyed for a couple of days. Warm them slightly before serving.
Enjoy the heavenly sweetness of homemade Gulab Jamun with family and friends. This classic Indian dessert is sure to impress and satisfy everyone's cravings.
